Plant Care:
Venus Fly Traps have the unfortunate reputation of being difficult to grow.
Follow these easy care tips to successfully grow these amazing plants.
Light:
Venus Fly Traps need 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily for healthy growth. Choose a bright sunny window sill.
Soil:
A mixture of sphagnum peat moss mixed with perlite mixed to a ratio of 2:1.
Watering:
During the growing season you should stand the pot in a saucer with water of up to 1cm in depth. Venus Fly Traps need pure water. Only used rain, distilled water or water filtered through a reverse osmosis system. Avoid watering the plant from the above. During winter the plants enter a dormancy period and the growing medium should be kept just moist.
Winter dormancy:
Venus Fly Traps enter a winter dormancy between May to August. During this time they may look less lively and some of their leaves can turn black. These can be trimmed off.
At the end of winter is an excellent time to repot your plant into fresh growing medium and or divide your plant if necessary. Growth will resume again in spring.
Fertiliser:
Venus Fly Traps are self-sufficient hunters and fertilising is therefore not recommended. Use of fertilizer can lead to a build-up of minerals which will eventually kill your Venus Fly Trap.
