Plant Care:
Tips on how to care for your plant successfully:
Light: Echeveria prefer full sun to part shade. Most Echeveria however, require protection from the midday and hot afternoon sun in summer. When moving your Echeveria around outside always make adjustments to light gradually so as to avoid sunburn. If you are growing or overwintering your Echeveria indoors always make sure you place them on a bright windowsill where they will receive sufficient sunlight to prevent the plants from ‘stretching’ for light.
Soil: Echeveria require a fast draining soil.
Potting: Echeveria grow extremely well in containers. Always ensure that a free draining potting medium is used. We recommend a good quality potting mix with the addition of fine gravel and perlite to improve the drainage. Re-potting of plants is best done in spring, the beginning of the growing period.
Watering: An important tip regarding the watering of Echeveria is to water the soil around the rosette of the plant and not the rosette itself. Never let water remain in the rosette as this can lead to fungal problems which could cause the rosette to rot which will ultimately kill the plant. Water the plant thoroughly. Allow the plant to drain, then allow the plant to dry out before watering again. Your plant should never stand in a drip tray with water after watering for any length of time. It is always best to pour this excess water off. Watering frequency should be reduced in winter. Frequency of watering is always the most difficult cultural point to give advice on as there are so many variables which influence it. When in doubt as to whether to water or not it is probably best to rather let the plant dry for another day or two and then water it as over-watering can kill your plant very quickly.
Temperature: Echeveria are frost sensitive plants and will not tolerate winter minimum temperatures of below 0 degrees Celsius. They will not survive heavy frost and should be brought indoors or provided with protection when temperatures drop below 0 degrees Celsius.
Fertiliser: Echeveria will benefit from applications of a balanced water-soluble fertiliser during spring and summer. Always use a very dilute solution of ¼ to ½ of the recommended dilution rate.
Pests: Always remove any dead leaves from around the base of the plant as this can be a haven for pests, particularly mealy bug. Aphids can also be found on Echeveria either on the new leaves or on the flower spike.
Please Note:
The plant is currently growing in a 7.5 cm plastic pot. Although our plants are grown under the same conditions and we carefully handpick your plant to ensure the best quality possible, no two plants are identical. The colours of plants can also vary according to the season. The plant supplied will be similar to the plant photographed.
